From the 1920s it was known as a wild place of mystery (and bear hunting), but it previously sustained lumber mills, tanneries, dairy farming, a vineyard, and the 'very fine home' of the local lumber baron.
Tour leader Nancy Bachana is a trail maintainer for NY-NJTC and a graduate student of Public History at CUNY-Staten Island. She is working with the Sullivan County Historical Society to document the history of the gorge.
After the 90-minute tour (3/4 mile one way), visitors may continue on extensive trails to three waterfalls and more fantastic views of the Neversink River.
Please be aware that there is no cell service, no bathrooms, and no garbage cans at the trailhead. The tour begins on a moderate descent with some loose stones, so we recommend walking sticks for participants who’d like more stability. The return to parking is a moderate incline.
