Baldwin Memorial Lean-To Winter Work Trip - February 17th, 18th, and 19th.

Trail Conference Catskills Lean-to Crew Leader Eric Friedman will be leading a work trip to the Baldwin Memorial Lean-to on Mount Tremper to remove the old roof shingles down the mountain by sled or pack, as conditions dictate. Some sleds & plastic toboggans will be available for use.

What we will be doing:

During the heat wave of August 2022, we rebuilt the roof structure and installed new shingles. Crew member Rebecca Stoltzfus had the idea that sledding the 500lbs of bagged up old singles would be an easier way to haul the debris out. Well, Becky will be in Mexico that weekend, so it's up to the rest of us to see how her idea works out. Volunteers can come for a day or stay the weekend at the lean-to with the crew to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Awareness and preparedness for winter camping is a must for those staying over.

Depending on attendance, the hope is the entirety of the haul out (about 500lbs of shingles in ~25lb bags) will be done on Saturday. Those camping out Friday night will haul a load out early, meeting Saturday arrivals by the road. Then, hike back up empty handed, to do a second trip out to the road - 1.25 miles each way.

Who to contact:

If you are able to help out with the project, please register on the form below. If you would like to register for more than one day, register on the other event links, or clarify in an email to Eric Friedman. Be sure to include cell phone numbers and address, for carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations. Contact Eric with any questions by email, text, or call 845-594-3817.

When to meet:

Friday afternoon meetup time will be determined by those arriving.
Saturday: 10am. Friday night campers will meet the arriving volunteers at the cul-de-sac at the end of Mt Laurel Rd.
Sunday: 10am. Saturday night campers will meet the arriving volunteers at the cul-de-sac at the end of Mt Laurel Rd. If the work has been completed on Saturday, Sunday arrivals will be notified.

Where to meet:

At the cul-de-sac at the end of Mt Laurel Rd, Shandaken, NY. 1/2 mile south of the DEC Trail access and parking, which is on the Mt Tremper - Phoenicia Road (Plank Rd) South of Phoenicia, off NYS Rt 28.

What to bring:

A sled or pack to haul out bagged shingles, snowshoes or microspikes (as conditions dictate) and proper clothing and footwear. Lunch and snacks, water (also available from spring), and a headlamp. If you'll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. For those staying over, the crew does a combination of shared and individual food, which will be organized following registering.

Additional Info:

The Hike In / Water / Shelter: In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or overnight, your help will be needed to carry out the old shingles. The hike in from the trailhead to the lean-to is 2 miles. We have obtained closer access to the project site from a neighbor who borders the state land. This includes a 1/2 mile moderate bushwack, along a flagged line leading to the marked trail, saving about 3/4 mile of hiking. Coordinating our arrival is important. A sketched map and details will be provided. There is a spring for water. The shelter and privy are in good shape. Firewood is abundant. Weather TBD.

Minors under 18: Will need to fill out a Guardian Consent Form, with a parent or guardian present during the worktrip.

Cell Service: There is limited cell service for texting or calling at or near the shelter. There is no service by the road. Boiceville has the last cell service.

Thank you again for your desire to help out. We're looking forward to seeing you at the shelter!
